Statement
The main body of Alec's work was developed from a continuing interest in aspects of archaeology especially those concerning the use, by early man, of signs and symbols, and the simple graphic forms of humans and animals.
This interest brought him into working collaboration with archaeologists as artist-on-site and in the production of joint art/archaeology exhibition ventures. Among projects of this kind were:

1.“Ancient Stones and Mystery Bones” for The Craven Museum, Skipton; an exhibition based on discoveries on a Celtic age site in the Yorkshire Dales.

2. “Moor Marks” exhibition for Bradford Metropolitan galleries staged at Cliffe Castle in Keighley in which he developed work following a drawing and recording survey of the marks and symbols left on the stones of Ilkley Moor by Pre-historic peoples.

3. “Signs of the Times”, an exhibition of etchings and linoprints on the above related themes shown at the People’s Palace of Art in Lviv, Ukraine.

His experiences in the Ukraine and travels in America, Ireland and Northern Britain, extended his vocabulary of marks and signs and later created works using, often playfully, those from a much broader compass. He frequently combined these with more modern, every-day signs and symbols including those from the electronic circuitry he had to work with during his time in industry.

In Alec's most recent work he returned to painting and began to take greater risks with colour than those afforded by etching and monochrome drawing.

The paintings to the right were completed in 2003.

Experience
Alec's ideas were expressed in a range of media but mainly through drawing, painting and printmaking.

Alec completed an MA Degree in Printmaking in Bradford in 2000 when he explored the imagery described above in a variety of print media.

Alec was a working member of the Print Link group at Craven College, Skipton where he was also part-time tutor in Painting and Art History.

Alec sadly passed away in 2009, we would all like to thank him for his dedication to AVA and his contribution to the art world.
